Dining With The One Whom My Soul Longs For
Accepting the Invitation
When I’m heavy-laden,
may I be reminded of the invitation.
The invitation to come and dine—
for your table is outside of time.
You’re never too busy or rushed,
but patiently waiting for me.
I don’t have to RSVP—
I can show up whenever and however
because you just want to be with me.
Your hospitality is unlike any other.
Receiving His Hospitality
And when I arrive,
you ask,
“Can I take your winter coat?”
I hesitate—
wondering what will happen
if I let it go
But, as I give it to you,
you hang it up all nice and neat—
only to return
with a garment of praise
to bestow upon me.
You make sure it fits just right,
and you smile back at me
as this seems more like a good fit.
And just when I think it can’t get any better,
you ask if I need anything to drink.
I’m not quite sure
how to admit of my need,
but you’re quick to remind me
of the wells of living water
that reside inside of me.
I sigh
a sigh
of relief.
Confident and secure
in the way you made me to be.
And oh, I almost forgot!
This is just the greeting—
there’s still a whole table
you’ve prepared for me.
Taking a Seat
I take a seat,
and I watch
as you take your rightful place.
You’re seated at the head of the table—
a place fit for a king.
But, it’s not just any seat.
For you are seated
in the mercy seat and
at the right hand of the father.
It’s the highest,
yet humblest,
seat at the table.
I can’t help but get lost
in awe and wonder of your majesty,
as I see you seated
in your rightful place.
Partaking in Communion
And while gazing upon the one
whom my soul longs for,
I hear the voice of many waters say,
“How can I serve you?”
I’m unsure of how
it can get any better.
But, then, my attention is directed
to what’s on the table.
There’s a bottle labeled, “New Wine,”
and the aroma of reconciliation permeates through the air,
as fresh bread awaits for me.
I’m not sure where to dig in first,
but I know both elements
equal the one.
It’s a complete meal,
not lacking anything I need—
for it is sufficient.
I pause—
taking it all in
and remembering the one
who gave it all for me.
