My Idolatry of Good

For quite some time, I’ve had this perception that good was always in the horizon, but never in the here and now. Good was always in sight, but out of reach. It was up ahead when I finally got to the milestones or benchmarks in my life that I had determined would finally make my life good.

Maybe you can relate?

For me, I’ve often though to myself, “Surely, good exists when I’m surrounded by a family of my own, or perhaps when I have a home of my own.”

And, while these desires are not bad, it was robbing me of seeing and enjoying the good that actually exists around me. Once I finally shifted my gaze from a distant horizon full of circumstances that may, or may not, turn out like I have hoped, I’ve begun to enjoy and partake in the good that exists in the here and now.

It’s having eyes to see how the Lord is in the midst of my current circumstances and working things out for good (Romans 8:28).

I have dear friends who have become like family. Not only that, but they have also invited me into their own family traditions and events. The one’s who have wept with me, prayed with me, and pointed me to Jesus in all circumstances.

They have been with me—in the here and now—and it’s good.

Good isn’t something we have to wait around for—it’s having eyes to see how the Lord is already working things out for good.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
